My DIY Artificial Turf Project: Because Mowing Was Not in the Plan

There comes a point in every DIY project where you look at your yard, look at the weather forecast, look at the lawn mower, and decide: there has to be another way.
For me, that way was artificial turf.
Was it an ambitious project? Absolutely. Did I learn more than I ever expected to know about measurements, leveling, drainage, and the mysterious amount of work required to make something look “easy”? Also yes.
But the goal was simple: to create a cleaner, greener-looking outdoor space with less ongoing lawn maintenance—especially during the rainy Pacific Northwest months, when mowing the lawn can feel less like a chore and more like a personality test.
The Vision
I wanted an outdoor area that looked tidy, felt usable, and did not require me to keep up with regular mowing, mud, or patchy grass.
Artificial turf is not a completely maintenance-free option—it still needs occasional cleaning and care—but it can be a practical choice for a small yard, patio area, pet space, play zone, or any place where natural grass is difficult to maintain.
Of course, I quickly learned that artificial turf is not simply “roll it out and call it good.” There are measurements. There is prep work. There may be gravel. And there is definitely a moment where you wonder if you should have hired someone.
But where is the fun in that?
What I’m Using
I gathered items for my project in my Amazon storefront so they are easy to find in one place.

Before ordering anything, measure your space carefully and check product specifications for coverage, backing, drainage, and installation recommendations. Buying turf without measuring first is how a simple project turns into a very expensive outdoor rug.
The DIY Reality
The glamorous version of this project is simple: lay turf, drink coffee, and enjoy a beautiful yard.
The real version is measuring twice, clearing the area, leveling the surface, making sure water has somewhere to go, wrestling a giant roll of turf into place, and trying not to create an accidental putting green in your backyard.
Still, there is something deeply satisfying about making a space feel more finished and functional with your own two hands—or at least with your own two hands and a few very helpful online tutorials.
A Few Things I Learned
- Measure more than once before ordering. Turf, borders, base material, and seams can add up quickly.
- Prioritize drainage. Especially in the Portland area, water needs a plan.
- Start with a smaller space if this is your first turf project. A side yard, pet area, balcony, or patio section can feel far more manageable than tackling an entire backyard.
- Give yourself extra time. DIY projects almost always take longer than the “quick and easy” video makes them look.
- Keep your sense of humor. At some point, you may be standing outside at 8 p.m. in questionable shoes, discussing drainage like it is your new profession.
Why I’m Doing It
As a Portland-area real estate agent, I spend a lot of time thinking about how homes *feel*. A polished, usable outdoor space can make everyday life more enjoyable—whether you are settling into a new home, preparing to host friends, or simply creating a backyard you actually want to use.
This project is less about having a perfect yard and more about creating a space that works better for real life.
And if it means I can spend a little less time thinking about mowing, that is a win.
